Need help finding a new game?

*I meant to post this before March 30 for #tabletopday but forgot to set it up, so here it is.

So this last week I was looking for a couple new games to pick up. I did the usual stuff I asked a few of my friends who have similar taste in games what they thought I’d like, but I still wasn’t comfortable buying the games suggested. $40-$70 is a lot for a game that will get played once and then just sit at the bottom of my closet. I signed up at Board Game Geek and compared games and read opinions but the things that helped me the most were on YouTube. I’m going to talk about the three that helped the most, these are not in any type of order.

Watch it Played is an extremely good show. The main host is Rodney every week or so he sits down, usually with his two co-hosts his daughter Andrea and his son Luke, and plays game or a part of a game. This is a great channel, it’s easy to watch and extremely informative. The first episode is him explaining the rules and gameplay, which is then followed by videos of them playing the game. He usually breaks up the game play in to at least two episodes and than lets viewers vote on what to do next, or when possible he has a player on the board that the viewers can control. This is a great way to see how to play the game and if it is something that you would like to play. Downside to this channel is time because of the way it’s film it does take a commitment at times. That’s really the only downside and its not that big of a deal. This really is a good show to get behind and watch, plus it’s great to see a family playing games together.

Dice Tower is a great review show. They have 100’s of reviews, with multiple people doing the reviews, and top 10 lists. The main review is Tom he is occasionally joined by his daughters or friends. Sam and Zee, Ryan is also main reviewer although I haven’t watched many of his reviews. This show is really really informative and vast, it really is hard to find a game that they haven’t reviewed. They have a website which is extremely user friendly and the show is entertaining, easy to watch and with the exception of the top 10 list the review videos are only 10-15 min long. The downside to this show is something that REALLY REALLY bothers me, when Tom introduces a game he dumps ALL the game pieces on the table. Every time he does it I get a tiny bit anxious thinking about the dinged corners and how long it’s gonna take to pick it all up and organize it neatly again. I’m a big fan of the top ten list that they’ve put out recently. My favorites are games NOT to play with an angry person and games that look stupid but aren’t.

Tabletop is a show similar to Watch it Played but it is edited down for time(they have recently started uploading the full game), viewers don’t vote for what happens, and it has famous people. It’s hosted by Wil Wheaton and is on Felicia Days Youtube channel Geek and Sundry, for each game Wil brings in different guest to spice it up some. Its a really fun and they pick interesting games to play. I actually found out about one of my favorite board games(Pandemic) on this show. It has been mentioned that (at least in the edited versions) it seems like they have ignored certain rules or changed them, Wil usually does mention any house rules.

When looking for a new game I can not suggest these channels enough, also check out everyone there is very helpful and nice.
