The First Avenger

So last week I saw Captain America was I was very impressed with it. Chris Evens was great as Steve Rogers(Captain America), and Hugo Weaving was amazing as Red Skull, but my favorite character was Dum Dum Dugan played by Neal McDonough. I don’t think that they called him by name in the movie but he is one of the solders in Steves crew. He is the one that had the mustache and bowler hat. It really got me excited for a possibility of a Howling Commandos movie. I doubt it will happen but still. This is an all around enjoyable movie that people should see. And if you are excited for The Avengers (who isn’t) stick around for a teaser after the movie.

The Amazing Spiderman trailer

Posted in Comics, Movies with tags on July 21, 2011 by random nerdling

Great thing come out of Comicon all the time but my favorite I always the movie news and trailers. I’m sure when I actually make it down to SD it will change but for now that’s my favorite part.

Anyways the trailer for The Amazing Spiderman dropped and it looks awesome! It does bring something up that I don’t think I ever thought about which is, what happened to Peters parents?

The beautiful Emma Stone is in it as Gwen Stacy and Denis Leary plays her father Captain Stacy. It also brings back the mechanical web shooters instead of the organic ones. The only part of the suit I don’t care for is the hands and feet. They just look weird.

The Dark Knight Rises

2 outta 3 aint bad

So spiderfriends I’ve seen 3 of the four super hero movies that come out this summer. The first two extremely enjoyable with one of them being a huge surprise and the third one being a minor disappointment.

Thor was a good flick it was fun, enjoyable and not dumbed down for the kids. I and my nephew both enjoyed it quit a bit. It was your basic superhero movie. Kat Dennings was great in it and they didn’t over use her even tho she was only there for comedic relief. Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston were great as Thor and Loki. I do wish the Warriors Three were used more but it is a Thor movie and not a movie about them.

The movie that surprised me the most is X-men First Class. Because of the previous 3 X-men movies I did not have high hopes for this one. In fact the only reason I went to go see it is because Avary wanted to see it. It was amazing. If I would have seen it before hand I wouldn’t have brought Avary to it because a decent portion of it is in German and Russian, but he still enjoyed it.  James McAvoy who played Charles Xavier and Michael Fassbender who played Magneto were amazing. It was such a character driven story and they take such care of the characters that you forget about the 3 previous X-movies.  The affects are great and it was good to see Banshee. I was also pleased that they started with Beast before the experiment went south. Seeing as he is the only one in the movie who was in Xaviers first class it was nice to see that he was handled well. Avary and I both really enjoyed this movie, even tho there wasn’t much action it was an extremely great superhero movie.

As far as the Green Lantern it was a decent pop corn flick. It was dumbed down some for the kids and there was more drama than there needed to be. When your power is a ring that can bring anything you can imagine to life you need to do more than a race track, gun, and two planes. You can see what they were trying to do but it didn’t work. I was pretty disappointed in it but Avary really liked it. A friend of mine made a great point that Ryan Reynolds would have played Kyle Rayner better than Hal Jordan. Seeing as Kyle was more of a joker and that’s what Reynolds plays best. Also the villain was a bad choice maybe if they chose The Manhunters or had Sinestro go evil in it, instead of hinting at it in the end.

So all that leaves is Captain America : The First Avenger. I am really looking forward to this one. It has a Rocketeer feel to it that I’m really liking. Plus there is this amazing poster that Paolo Rivera made! This poster REALLY does it for me. I love it, and now I’m even more excited to see it. This advertisement definitely worked!

Wonder Bros

Since I had so many questions about where I got my dads Zombie Portrait on facebook I thought I’d write about it here.

I like a lot of people first heard about wonder bros and their zombie portraits from Tell “em Steve Dave as soon as I heard about them I knew that I had to get one for my dad.

Wonder Bros consist of three very talented brothers Mike, Matt, and Eric. Mike is the one who helped me so he is the only one I’ve dealt with. You can see some of their art work here. They’ve done a lot of Zombie paintings, and even have a Store where you can buy their paintings and collectibles. I’m a big fan of a lot of their work. Since a lot of it is comic book, zombie, Smodcast, or Pop Culture influenced. The Picasso Superheroes are really creative.

Mike was extremely helpful with tips to help me pick a picture of my dad that would turn out good. He also responded quickly to any questions I had and was insanely nice and polite. After I sent him a few pictures to choose from he responded with the two pictures that he was gonna do a rough sketch of. He asked if those pictures were ok or if I really wanted a different one. I told him that those were great and I was excited to see the rough drafts which I got with in 48 hours. I picked my favorite and he went to work. (I wish I didn’t delete my e-mails with Mike right when I saw the picture so I could give better time line but I’m OCD about keeping my inbox clean) It was a week/ week and a half later that I got an E-mail of the picture above. He asked if I liked it and if I wanted him to add anything but I loved it as it was so I told him it was great. He put a few protective coats on it and sent it my way. He mailed it out to me on Monday and I got it this morning (Friday). I gave it to my dad and he loved it. It was the perfect gift for a 44 year old who is up until midnight playing left 4 dead 2, or anyone who loves zombies.

I’m pretty sure that they whole thing took only 3-4 weeks. I do know that it might take longer if they have a lot on their plates. I also picked up a Green Arrow painting that I just had to have.

I definitely plan on using their service again. I know my nephew would love a few comic book hero paintings and I want one of the Joker and one of Two Face. So I will definitely be getting a hold of Mike again and so should you! They are very talented, reasonably price, and are great to work with. Not to mention they are fans of Comics, Smodcast and Pop Culture whats not to love? So check them out all of the links on this post go to a part of their site or you can just go to

I’ve been on a comic kick again recently.  I think it started when I picked up Kevin Smiths run of Batman (Cacophony and Widening Gyre). They are great! Kevin brings back one of my favorite villains, Onomatopoeia. He created him for his run of Green Arrow.  He is very creepy and no has even seen his face. In my opinion he is as creepy as The Joker and Two Face.  I just finished The Long Halloween which is a great Batman story by Jeph Loeb. It is a great detective story. With a Silence of the Lambs type feel to it. It was truly enjoyable and when I started the book I wasn’t able to put it down.

Since I plan on picking up Season 8 vol. 7(possibly vol. 8 if it’s out)  of Buffy when I’m in the cities, I reread vol. 1-6. I really enjoy it the only problem I have it the background art is crap.  But vol. 6 is great, it brings back Oz and you even see The Slayers break a big rule in The Slayer hand book. But now that I write this it was broken in one episode early on in the series. But if your a fan of Buffy pick it up.

In honor of the Thor, Captain America, Green Lantern, and X-men movies coming out I plan on posting my top 10 favorite comic book movies. So I’ve been re-watching my favorites so I hopefully have an easier time ranking them. I’ve watched every Batman movie with the exception of Batman and Robin (for obvious reasons).

I watched them in order of release dates. So I started with the ’66 version. It was as fun as I remembered as a kid.  But what really surprised me was how much I loved the ’89 version. I’ve always loved this version but with The Dark Knight I just forgot how dark and great it is. Nicholsons Joker was extremely creepy and killed a lot more people than I remembered.  Also I really like how it wasn’t an origin story. It seems like that is all they are putting out now. They are filming the re-boot of Spider-Man this year and even though it’ll only be 5 years since Spider-Man 3 they are doing another origin story. It’s aggravating because there are so many great stories out there for them to pull from so it doesn’t even have to be something completely original.

Speaking of Spider-Man did it bother anyone else that they took an amazing actor, who has great control of his facial muscles, had him play the Green Goblin and then put a mask on him that made him look like a Power Ranger villain? Willem Dafoe is great , he even shows how great he is when he is talking to himself in the mirror and makes the goblin face!! That part is what bothered me the most. Anyways I digress.

I re-watched The Dark Knight as well. Now even though I own the DVD I haven’t watched it since I saw it in theaters. I saw it 3 or 4 times with in a 2 month period. By the last time I saw it I can honestly say I was sick of it.  It’s a long movie and seeing any film that many times in that short of period will make you bored/sick of it. But re-watching it tonight made me remember why so many people(including myself the first time) loved it. It is great. Although on one hand I do wish they used Two Face more but then you run in to the same issues with other comic book movies where you have to many villains. I was also disappointed in the fact that they didn’t mention the Arkham breakout in Batman Begins. If Nolan doesn’t bring it up in his last Batfilm its a huge missed opportunity.

So thats about it for this week. Remember I am seeing Gabriel Iglesias on Sunday. So I’ll put up a review about that. And hopefully I’ll have my top 10 comic book movies on here with in the next couple weeks.  I’m trying to write shorter posts so I’ll probably break it in to two parts.
