Does Tough Guys hold up?

Posted in Movies on June 28, 2012 by random nerdling

Tough Guys came out in 1986, it stars Burt Lancaster(Harry), Kirk Douglas(Archie), and Dana Carvey (Richie their parole officer). It’s about 2 gangsters who get out of prison after 30 years for robbing a train. Not only do they have to deal with how the world has changed in 30 years and being forced to retire but as soon as they get out of the prison gates a guy tries to kill them.

It was nice to see that my favorite parts of the film still held up stopping the bank robbery and fighting the gang in the ally. One thing that forces me out is the same thing that brought me out as a kid. When Archie goes to that weird ass store before his date. It seems like every movie from the 80s and 90s when somebody goes to LA or travels forward in time they pick the weirdest most fucked up store they can think of. Things start to sink when when Harry is forced into a nursing home, Archie has to work at a crappy ice cream place, and their old bar is now a gay bar. They fake a heart attack to steal an armored truck only to find out it’s basically empty, they get away with a roll of quarters. After this they decide to get the gang back together, only to find out that most of them are dead or unable to do anything without a nurse.  So they decided to rob the same train that ended up putting them in jail the first time, since it’s going on its final run before the train is retired.

I still love this movie, it reminds me of my grandmother and it’s a good watch. Ultimately I don’t know why this isn’t out on DVD yet. It’s a fun movie from the 80s and holds up.

I’m to old for this shit.

Unfortunately I was busy during the month of my favorite holiday, Halloween. Even though Christmas is my least favorite holiday there are some great Christmas movies out there. And everyone of course knows the basics (Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Story, White Christmas, ect.) but my list is for people who hate Christmas and Christmas movies. So throw away all that useless cheer and pour yourself a cup of cynicism and enjoy…. Lethal Weapon!

Reasons it’s a Christmas movie?
The movie opens with Jingle Bell Rock. It is littered with Christmas decorations and Christmas specials are constantly on the tv. Riggs even goes “tree shopping”

This was one of my favorite movies growing up. It is THE cop movie, it starts a great series, but number one is by far the best, it’s full of action and laughs.

There are two scenes that have always gotten me and both involve Mel Gibson. In the first one Gibbs loads one bullet in to his gun and contemplates killing himself. It’s so stressful, even though it’s obvious that Riggs isn’t going to kill himself, since he is a main character. The other scene is when they have Riggs strung up and are electrocuting him. It just looks painful.

It’s such a great buddy cop movie and builds a great foundation for their partnership in the movies to come. My favorite part of the movie is when Riggs and Mr. Joshua fight at the end of the movie. They finally bring the movie to an end with Riggs joining the Murtaughs for a family Christmas.

Be sure to check back for more Christmas movies for people who hate Christmas and Christmas movies.

I know I said that part 2 of my top ten tv shows would be my next post but I forgot that Red State hit VOD today. I’ll try to keep it fairly spoiler free. I’m watching it for the 3rd time as I write this. You can get all the information on where to watch it here.

Red State is about 3 kids going in to the woods to get laid by someone they met online, who are then kidnaped by a small religious group.

One thing that really stood out to me was the cast. Everyone is insanely believable and no one feels like they were just dropped in.

Michael Parks plays Abin Cooper the pastor of the church and he is amazing. During the sermon he honestly creeps me out. It is such an amazing performance, if he doesn’t at least get an Oscar nomination something is wrong. I am not over exaggerating or kidding when I say that there isn’t a bad performance in the film.

It is shot beautifully. Kevin really knows how to make you feel like you are in this movie. The sermon has a true church feel to it. You really feel like your people watching in the back of the church.

There isn’t any real music in the film. With the exception of a car ride every song is sung by Michael Parks, and he has such an amazing voice. It’s haunting and relaxing at the same time. In fact since all of the songs are religious I’m thinking about picking up the sound track for my grandma.

In the end Red State is a fast paced film that is full of twist and turns that everyone should see. The best way to describe it is a thriller but really it’s just a genre stew. It really is my favorite movie of the year. Again if you wanna watch it you can go here for all the information.

In slightly related news congratulations to Kevin and the guys from Tell ’em Steve Dave! AMC greenlit their reality show based out of Jay and Silent Bobs Secret Stash. Check out the promo art below, with zombie paintings of the TESD crew by the wonder bros.

Kevin Smith Update

Posted in Movies with tags , , on July 29, 2011 by random nerdling

Kevin is a busy guy he has 2 tv shows in the works and has hinted at bring the clerks cartoon back. The one show is a Pawn Stars type show held in his comic book store, and the other one is a daily talk show type show. From the sounds of it all of your favorite SIR stars will show up at one time or another. Everything is still a pilot so lets hope at least one of these works out.

Now on for news that really got me excited a RED STATE TRAILER was released today. Holy shit does it look good. I couldn’t get the trailer to play on The Official Red State Site but I was able to get the teaser to play it could just be that a lot of people are one the site (since I’m writing this on the day that Kevin dropped the trailer.) On September 1st Lionsgate is putting Red State on VOD. So I’ll be watching it then on my 360. It will be on DVD on Oct. 19th.

Also coming to DVD in November is Too Fat For 40 and Smodimations season 1.

Too Fat is a Q&A that was recorded for his 40th birthday. In the one that I saw on Netflix it was only one question which I thought was pretty funny, cause as anyone who fallows Kevin knows he is a chatty man. But apparently he did more Q&A after that which will be on the disc as well.

Smodimations is great if you missed season 1 check out season 2. It’s an animated version of bits of the podcast, and they are very funny.

The Tell ’em Steve Dave boys also teamed up with Microsoft and the Zune network for a show called Tell ’em Steve Dave Overkill. If you love TESD check it out! It’s great.

The First Avenger

So last week I saw Captain America was I was very impressed with it. Chris Evens was great as Steve Rogers(Captain America), and Hugo Weaving was amazing as Red Skull, but my favorite character was Dum Dum Dugan played by Neal McDonough. I don’t think that they called him by name in the movie but he is one of the solders in Steves crew. He is the one that had the mustache and bowler hat. It really got me excited for a possibility of a Howling Commandos movie. I doubt it will happen but still. This is an all around enjoyable movie that people should see. And if you are excited for The Avengers (who isn’t) stick around for a teaser after the movie.

The Amazing Spiderman trailer

Posted in Comics, Movies with tags on July 21, 2011 by random nerdling

Great thing come out of Comicon all the time but my favorite I always the movie news and trailers. I’m sure when I actually make it down to SD it will change but for now that’s my favorite part.

Anyways the trailer for The Amazing Spiderman dropped and it looks awesome! It does bring something up that I don’t think I ever thought about which is, what happened to Peters parents?

The beautiful Emma Stone is in it as Gwen Stacy and Denis Leary plays her father Captain Stacy. It also brings back the mechanical web shooters instead of the organic ones. The only part of the suit I don’t care for is the hands and feet. They just look weird.
